4-Hospital Merger on South Side is Called Off
Four South Side hospitals have called off plans to combine into a new system after state lawmakers failed to set aside funding for the project, the Chicago Tribune reported. Advocate Trinity Hospital, Mercy Hospital & Medical Center, South Shore Hospital and St. Bernard Hospital said in January they would join forces as part of a $1.1-billion project that included building at least one new hospital campus.
The hospitals had asked legislators for $110 million for fiscal year 2021, and a total of $520 million over the next five years, to offset expected losses. But a bill passed by the legislature Friday didn’t include that $520 million.
Based on this change to the legislation, “We see no path forward for our project that would transform health care on the South Side and help address disparities in health for the patients we serve,” hospital leaders said in a letter Tuesday.
