3M’s 220K-SF Facility Coming to Market, Following Closure

Minnesota-based manufacturing company 3M is planning to close its north Austin manufacturing plant by the end of 2019. At that time, the 220,000-square-foot facility on Research Boulevard will be up for sale. The building has been open since the early 1980s, and currently houses about 120 employees.

The plant manufactures copper and fiber connectivity products, as well as items related to utility marketing and communications headsets. A small number of jobs eliminated locally could be relocated to 3M’s electrical plant in New Ulm, MN, a corporate spokesperson told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Jobs at the plant will be eliminated in waves throughout 2019, and employees can apply for other positions within the company.

3M sold its Austin Center Campus in early February 2018 to World Class Property Co., and is leasing the space until it can relocate hundreds of employees to northeast Austin. The manufacturing plant was not part of that transaction.
