$3B Overhaul Plan for Lake Shore Drive Invites Public Comment
A public-comment period launches Monday for a $3-billion project to modernize seven miles of North Lake Shore Drive. Chicagoans may provide input both via an interactive website and a series of live webinars.
The study by the Chicago and Illinois Departments of Transportation has narrowed down options for the project to five alternatives, the Chicago Tribune reported. Efforts to revamp the area are meant to address both traffic and shoreline issues. Transit enhancements are aimed at improving bus travel time and reliability, while shoreline protection efforts are intended to safeguard North Lake Shore Drive from flooding.
The five proposals vary by the number of traffic lanes and bus lanes and by whether motorists can pay to use bus lanes. All include improvements for shoreline protection, park access and traffic signals.
“It’s an unusual time, but we want to keep moving forward while we can,” said CDOT spokesman Michael Claffey.
