$336M Rockaway Shorefront Project Launches on 8th Anniversary of Sandy
Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced the start of construction on the federally funded Rockaways – Atlantic Shorefront Project, intended to protect communities and strengthen the shoreline along the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens.
Thursday’s announcement coincided with the eighth anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, the first storm of its severity to make landfall in New York City since 1821.
Phase I of the $336-million project will include the construction of 14 new stone groin structures and the rehabilitation of five existing groins along the Rockaway Peninsula. Phase II will include the construction of a reinforced dune system.
“Eight years ago, Hurricane Sandy devastated our city and our shoreline,” said de Blasio. “We committed to building back stronger than ever, and I am thankful for our federal and state partners for working together to make this critically important project come to life.”
