300K Affordable Apartments by 2026
Remember that promise Mayor Bill de Blasio made to build or preserve 200,000 affordable homes in the 10 years ending 2024? It seemed like a lot at the time — a bold expansion of former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s earlier plan for 165,000 affordable apartments in 10 years.
It turns out the City is ahead of schedule. It’s now planning to build or preserve 300,000 such apartments by 2026 — enough for the entire population of Boston or Seattle.
“We’ve kept our promises to New Yorkers, and now it’s time to go farther and faster,” said Mayor de Blasio, who is running for re-election.
