Rosie the Riveter’s Birthplace Sold for Testing Site

The American Center for Mobility will purchase more than 300 acres of the former Ford Motor Co. Willow Run bomber factory (the birthplace of “Rosie the Riveter”) for $1.2 million. The eventual goal is to create a testing ground to help develop a self-driving car.

The property in Ypsilanti Township, MI served as a bomber plant during World War II. Later, it was used as a GM power-train facility. Revitalizing Auto Communities Environmental Response Trust, or RACER, has been charged with handling the cleanup and redevelopment of former General Motors plants in Michigan after the company’s 2009 bankruptcy.

“The whole project represents a multi-layered partnership between many groups, and getting the agreement in place toward the purchase of the land is a giant step forward,” said Steve Arwood, CEO with the Michigan Economic Development Corp.
