3 Chicago Sites on Landmarks Group’s Endangered Places List

A long-vacant bank building on the South Side is among three Chicago sites named by Landmarks Illinois to its 2019 list of Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois.

Currently owned by the Cook County Land Bank Authority, the Washington Park National Bank in Woodlawn is fast-tracked for redevelopment and is likely to be demolished.

Built in 1924, Washington Park National Bank was joined on the list by the James R. Thompson Center downtown—named to the list for the third consecutive year—and Sheffield National Register Historic District in the North Side’s Lincoln Park neighborhood.

“A troubling trend with this year’s Most Endangered sites is the number of historic places that face demolition despite strong and active community support for preservation,” said Landmarks Illinois CEO Bonnie McDonald.

The advocacy group has identified 242 threatened historic buildings and sites since 1995. Of these, 113 have been spared.
