Grand Army Plaza Set for First Repairs in Nearly 40 Years
Grand Army Plaza, the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed plaza at the entrance to Prospect Park in Brooklyn, is about to undergo an $8.9-million restoration. The nonprofit Prospect Park Alliance will undertake the project, which includes restoring the historic Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Arch, in partnership with the city. Mayor Bill de Blasio (at podium) announced the project Friday.
Calling the arch “an iconic landmark in Brooklyn,” Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver said it was “long overdue for repairs.” The city last undertook a restoration of the arch in 1980, at a time when the structure was in severe disrepair.
The $8.9 million in city funding will go toward replacing the arch’s roof, cleaning and repointing the brick and stone structure, repairing the interior iron staircases that lead to the roof, and replacing interior and exterior lighting. The project will also include replanting the berms that frame the plaza and replacing cracked pavement.
