$20M Manufacturing Training Hub on Tap for Brownsville

A memorandum of understanding has been signed by the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley’s College of Engineering and Computer Science and the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corp. The agreement is for a 20,000-square-foot Manufacturing Innovations Hub (MIH), to be built at State Highways 511 and 48 in Brownsville, near the Port of Brownsville.

The MIH’s main purpose will be to train students to become master tool and die makers. Additionally, the hub will help develop production tools and in building prototypes to manufacture commercial products.

“The idea is to keep the talented student pool in the Valley, by providing them with an apprenticeship to build upon their skills,” said UTRGV associate dean Immanuel Edinbarough. Edinbarough, along with UTRGV deans Alexander Domijan and Constantine Tarawneh, are leading the initiative. The GBIC will fund the center for five years. Projected revenue from the project is estimated at $1 billion.
