$200M Urban Innovation Campus Envisioned for Former Boston Globe Site

Boston-based Nordblom Company and Alcion Ventures plan to redevelop the former Boston Globe newspaper site into a $200-million, urban innovation campus called The BEAT. The developer envisions breathing new life into a 16-acre vacant property at 135 Morrissey Blvd. in Boston it acquired from the Globe in December for $81 million.

The 695,000 square-foot building, which housed the newspaper for more than 60 years, will be rejuvenated and reconfigured by mid-2019 to appeal to technology, life sciences, and advanced manufacturing occupiers. The name pays homage to the reporters who covered beats, and stands for The Boston Exchange for Accelerated Technology.

Nordblom Company’s Ogden Hunnewell believes the existing Dorchester facility’s dramatic high ceilings, large open floorplates and natural light is ideal for a “high-energy,” creative modern workplace near UMass Boston, and to the MBTA Red Line. Planned amenities include a fitness center and food hall with a brew pub.
