$2.1B in Economic Impact of Proposed Chargers ‘Convadium’
The proposed San Diego Chargers downtown ‘convadium’ could add $2.1 billion to the local economy, and create 15,000 jobs during construction. A new independent economic analysis, funded by the team, also found that the combined football stadium-convention center would generate $400 million in annual regional economic impact, and add more than 6,400 permanent jobs annually.
Researchers from UC San Diego and a construction trade group say the $1.8-billion dual-purpose facility will increase direct spending from football operations, conventions and events. Additionally, spending in the region would increase as a result of construction activities and increased bookings at the expanded facilities.
The proposed project adds 385,000 leasable square feet to the maxed-out convention center. Next month, San Diego voters will decide if the project will be permitted to proceed.
