Salt sheds are normally ugly, utilitarian structures. But Tribeca is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the world, and so naturally its 67-foot-tall structure to hold 5,000 tons of road salt is an $18 million work of art.

Most recently, Governing Magazine, a national magazine read by policy makers and public officials, recognized the giant concrete salt bin “as one of the city’s best public sculptures.” Finished last winter and designed by Dattner Architects to resemble a salt crystal, the bluish concrete is designed to age to a salty grey.
