$18M Pilot Program Poised to Clear Traffic Congestion

It’s no secret that traffic is horrible in Houston; it’s one reason why another roadway loop around the metro (SH 99 – Grand Parkway) is slowly being built around the metro. The Texas Department of Transportation is proceeding with something else: An $18 million, three-year test of a system, ConnectSmart, to help ease current traffic congestion.

ConnectSmart combines real-time traffic information with travel time analysis, transit and ride-sharing information and even walking options. The information will be made available through smartphone apps, websites and message signs on local highways. The idea is to encourage commuters to make intelligent decisions about when – and how – to get from point A to point B.
