160 Apartments on Public Housing Parking Lot

Construction started on 160 new apartments on the site of the Robert Fulton Houses, a public housing community in Manhattan.

“New York City is facing a serious housing crisis, and this new project at Fulton Houses will help address some of that burden,” said Shola Olatoye, chair and CEO of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).

Artimus Construction will build an 18-story apartment building with a landscaped rooftop, outdoor recreational areas and 8,000 square feet of community space. The apartments will be priced to be permanently affordable at a wide range of incomes — for example, $33,000 to 110,000 a year for an individual.

NYCHA gave the $77.8 million development a 99-year lease on the 11,000-square-foot site at 401 West 18th St., once home to a trash compactor and a rarely-used parking lot. In exchange, Artimus built a new trash compactor nearby, and committed to capital improvement upgrades to the public housing community, including a basketball court and children’s playground.
