140K-SF Office Development to Incorporate Sustainability and Walkability

Hixon Properties Inc. and partner Cavender family unveiled plans for the first phase of a sustainable, walkable urban office development on Broadway and 8th Streets in San Antonio. Named Cavender Office Project, the plans call for a 140,000-square-foot commercial building breaking out to 125,000 square feet of office space and 15,000 square feet of ground-level retail. Scheduled groundbreaking is spring 2018.

The sustainability component will come from planned use of a mass timber structural system, versus the typical concrete or steel materials. “Mass timber structures are on the cutting-edge of sustainable construction options,” Hixon Properties’ Chief Investment Officer John Beauchamp told the San Antonio Business Journal. He added that it’s likely the project will be the first of its kind for Texas.

Hixon Properties’ overall goal is to develop what company president Jack Spector calls a “walkable neighborhood that incorporates new buildings and old.”
