$13M La Villita Renovation Plan OK’d
The San Antonio City Council approved a $12.6 million redevelopment plan for the Mayor Maury Maverick Plaza and La Villita Historic Arts Village. The plan will add three locally owned restaurants, as well as infrastructure improvements, to the location south of the River Walk, in downtown San Antonio by 2021.
The redevelopment effort is being led by Johnny Hernandez of Grupo La Gloria. Hernandez, a chef, is planning to open a Mexican-themed restaurant in the development. Two other chefs, Elizabeth Johnson and Steve McHugh, will open an indigenous food restaurant and Alsatian beer garden, respectively.
The plan will include re-pavement of Villita, Old Alamo and King Philip Streets, as well as the plaza itself. Nueva Street will also be improved, with metered, angled parking added.
