102-Mile Hidalgo County Loop Destined as Toll Road
The Hidalgo County Regional Mobility Authority announced that the Hidalgo County Loop, a 102-mile road in the planning stages, will be a toll road. Though the Texas House in May 2017 voted against a bill that would allow private companies to fund highway projects through tolling, developers who don’t rely on the Texas Department of Transportation can fund the roads through tolls.
Pilar Rodriguez with the Hidalgo County RMA indicated that the toll funding was necessary, as the road was needed for “goods that are trying to get to the area, through the area and out of the area,” he told the Rio Grande Guardian.
The road is anticipated to take 25-30 years to build, with the first part of the loop involving a section near the Texas-Mexico border.
