$100M for East Side Greenway

City officials are finally designing a new section of the Greenway on the Manhattan Waterfront. The latest piece of the Greenway will run between E. 53rd St. and E. 61st St.

“For years, East Side residents have looked at the Hudson River Park and wondered why they didn’t have that same type of world class greenway all along the East River,” said James Patchett, president of the New York City Economic Development Corp.

It’s part of a goal to create a contiguous 32-mile waterfront pedestrian promenade and bicycling path around the whole of Manhattan. In April, Mayor Bill de Blasio dedicated $100 million to fill a significant part of the largest gap in the Greenway along the East Side. A continuous Greenway already runs along the West Side of Manhattan, from Battery Park to the George Washington Bridge.

Construction of the new East Side segment will commence in 2019, with completion expected in 2022.
