$1.2M Lawsuit for Airbnb Landlord

New York City is suing building owner Rose King for $1.2 million. City lawyers allege she rented apartments in three buildings on Manhattan’s Lower East Side through the home-sharing website Airbnb — using at least nine separate aliases to conceal her identity.

“New Yorkers can’t afford to see affordable homes turned into hotels,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio, according to coverage in the New York Post.

The City’s multiple dwelling law makes it illegal to rent or sublet an entire apartment for less than 30 days. Airbnb, for its part, says its business is to help people “share” their own homes — not operate large-scale hotels.
