Leading in Tough Times: Tere Blanca, Blanca Commercial Real Estate

Throughout the month of August, Connect CRE is running a series titled “Leading in Tough Times.” We’ve asked leaders around the U.S. and across the commercial real estate spectrum to share their wisdom and discuss lessons learned. In this installment, you’ll hear from Tere Blanca, founder, chairman and CEO of Blanca Commercial Real Estate.
Q: What’s the most common mistake leaders make in an inhospitable market?
A: Staying the course, ignoring threats. Being nimble and adaptable to pivot on strategies and execution is crucial. Leaders should focus on the opportunities created during times of crisis and what they can control. Great companies require leaders who can make decisions swiftly, even in the absence of all facts. Having the right people in the right seats, listening, and collaborating is essential to make good decisions, especially during uncertain times.
Q: What leadership advice would you like to give your younger self?
A: Trust my intuition in addition to digging in to learn the facts. My instincts have often led me to make the right choices, so I have learned not to second-guess my intuition.
Q: What’s the most valuable leadership advice you’ve ever been given?
A: The most valuable leadership advice I’ve been given has been on the importance of effective communication, both written and verbal, and being present. These skills are essential not only in business but also in personal relationships. Be present, refine your communication skills, and be thoughtful in your interactions with others, even if it’s through text or email, but there is no replacement for having conversations with people. Clear and thoughtful communication fosters understanding and better relationships.
