Leading in Tough Times: Jeffrey Rinkov, Lee & Associates
Throughout the month of August, Connect CRE is running a series titled “Leading in Tough Times.” We’ve asked leaders around the U.S. and across the commercial real estate spectrum to share their wisdom and discuss lessons learned. In this installment, you’ll hear from Jeffrey Rinkov, CEO of Lee & Associates.
Q: What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned about leading in a challenging environment?
A: That it is important to rely on the foundational principals of your company, the leadership around you and the capable professionals you have surrounded yourself with. It is important to have perspective and understand the cyclical nature of our business and the economy. It is paramount to use previous experience in guiding, advising and leading when those in your organization are most in need of assistance.
Q: What’s the most common mistake leaders make in an inhospitable market?
A: Some leaders are fearful to acknowledge the challenges of certain predicaments and market fluctuations. My experience has led me to embrace the complexities of a dynamic market that may at first glance appear to be working against us. It is those complexities and inefficiencies where lasting relationships with clients are built, real opportunity is created, and how positive forces are activated to compel more favorable general conditions.
Q: What leadership advice would you like to give your younger self?
A: I would share the following with my younger self:
- Work hard to be a better listener – hearing the ideas, concerns and input from others makes a better leader.
- Surround yourself with a team that is smarter than you and specializes in the areas where you are weakest
- Keep learning. Be curious and fearful of complacency. Push yourself.
- Don’t dwell on the mistakes, use those experience to shape your character and future actions – learn from them, and never repeat them!
