Leading in Tough Times: James Flynn, Lument

Throughout the month of August, Connect CRE is running a series titled “Leading in Tough Times.” We’ve asked leaders around the U.S. and across the commercial real estate spectrum to share their wisdom and discuss lessons learned. In this installment, you’ll hear from James Flynn, CEO of Lument.
Q: What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned about leading in a challenging environment?
A: In a challenging environment, it’s critical to share as much information with employees as possible and to give honest, straightforward answers to questions they may have.
Q: What leadership advice would you like to give your younger self?
A: I’d remind my younger self that when you begin your career every kind of person you work with and meet with has the same opportunity to be part of your network for the next 20-30 years. So start building that network early.
Q: What’s the most valuable leadership advice you’ve ever been given?
A: Early in my career, someone shared with me that when something goes wrong, it’s solvable—the only problem that isn’t solvable is the one that you don’t know about.
