Historic Downtown Denver Building Hits the Market

It’s probably best known as The George. It was called that for over 100 years. Now called The Symes Buildings, the nearly 100,000 square foot building is up for sale. The Denver Business Journal reports the totally vacant building at 820 16th St. was listed for sale as a bank-owned foreclosure and redevelopment opportunity. The sale is a traditional investment sale rather than an auction.

The asking price for the 120-year-old building was not publicly available. Harbor Associates, which purchased the building for $17.2 million in 2022, defaulted on an $18.66 million loan from Thorofare Capital.  Thorofare ultimately acquired the property for $6 million at a foreclosure auction in February.

The property is being advertised as including an approved site plan valid until 2030. Future developers have zoning rights to convert the property to residential use. A buyer could pursue another use that reactivates the building.
