Report: NYS Growth is Increasingly Concentrated Downstate

New York State remains one of the nation’s largest economic engines, but growth increasingly is concentrated downstate and in a few upstate urbanized employment centers, the Citizens Budget Commission (CBC) reported Monday. Outside the opportunity corridor, encompassing the New York City metro area and the Capital Region, and a handful of upstate cities, many communities face longstanding challenges.

The CBC has launched “Competitive NYS: Value Proposition Tracker,” a dashboard providing a look at New York’s population, economy, taxes, public spending and education. “How well New York attracts and retains residents and business—its competitiveness— drives growth, opportunity and quality of life for all New Yorkers,” said CBC president Andrew Rein.

He continued, “New York has many great strengths, but longstanding challenges weigh some regions down, with declining population and employment. This is precisely why affordability programs, leveraging our community and senior colleges, regulatory reform, and smart climate policy are so crucial to attract and grow our people and jobs.”
