Buc-ee's to build biggest store at site of first store

Work Begins on First NC Buc-ee’s

Town leaders often don’t come out for the groundbreaking of a convenience store or gas station, but if it’s a Buc-ee’s, that’s a different story. Over a dozen politicians and public officials attended the big day in Mebane, marking the construction of the state’s first Buc-ee’s.

The 30-acre property will include a 74,000-square-foot facility with 120 fueling positions. It’s expected to create more than 200 jobs in Mebane and the surrounding area. The store, which is larger than most supermarkets, will cost between $60 and $70 million to build. Buc-ee’s is best known for its spotless restrooms, huge gas pumps, and massive wall of snacks, apparel, and souvenirs.

The first North Carolina Buc-ee’s location is off the Interstate 40-Interstate 85 corridor. The state plans to spend $33 million to improve the I-40/I-80 interchange. The Buc-ee’s is expected to spark significant development on the 320-acre site. Mebane is between Greensboro and Durham.

Buc-ee’s officials expect construction to be completed by November 2027.
