Meta Forges Partnerships for Space Solar, Long-Duration Energy Storage to Power AI

Meta Platforms has formed partnerships with Overview Energy and Noon Energy to provide its AI infrastructure and data center operations with reliable power. Via the Overview partnership, Meta will beam solar energy from space, while the Noon Energy agreement calls for long-duration power storage capacity.

With an orbital demonstration slated for 2028, Overview plans to deploy satellites in geosynchronous orbit roughly 22,000 miles above Earth’s equator, collecting energy in space and beaming it to Earth-based solar facilities on the ground as low-intensity, near-infrared light. “This means solar farms that currently sit idle at night can keep producing electricity around the clock, maximizing their output and creating more energy for the grid,” said Meta.

“Space is becoming part of America’s energy infrastructure,” said Marc Berte, CEO of Overview Energy. “Our approach to space solar energy enables hyperscalers and technology providers to secure clean power with reliable siting, and speed to power. Together with Meta, we’re looking beyond traditional constraints on where and when power can be delivered to meet the growing demand for electricity.”

The Noon Energy program, also set for a 2028 launch, entails modular, reversible solid oxide fuel cells and carbon-based storage to provide more than 100 hours of energy storage, “far beyond what today’s lithium-ion batteries can deliver,” according to Meta. “Its modular design means capacity can grow alongside our data center footprint without requiring entirely new infrastructure.” Both partnerships call for capacity of 1 gigawatt of energy.
