SA Spurs Advancing Downtown Arena, Entertainment District Plans

The San Antonio Spurs ownership is seeking to hire a design and construction team for the new arena district.

The San Antonio Business Journal reports that Spurs ownership has been in talks with the City of San Antonio about contributing as much as $490 million toward the development of a roughly $1 billion arena.

In November, Bexar voters approved allocating more than $300 million in county funding toward the project. The Spurs’ contribution to the arena development could eclipse $500 million. Its investment in the broader arena district development could top a billion dollars.

Pro sports entertainment districts are mixed-use developments anchored by stadiums, designed to create year-round, walkable neighborhoods featuring residential units, restaurants, hotels, and office space. They attempt to transform team venues into daily destinations, enhancing fan experience and boosting team revenue. Major examples include The Battery Atlanta, Deer District in Milwaukee, and Texas Live!.
