In Reversal, Bed Bath & Beyond Will Reopen in California

As part of a 98-store nationwide rollout, the combined Container Store/Bed Bath & Beyond formats will include 12 locations in California. The announcement represented a reversal of Bed Bath executive chairman and CEO Marcus Lemonis’ previous stance, in which he said last year the company would not operate stores in California due to what he saw as overregulation and a risky business environment.

Future locations of The Container Store + Bed Bath & Beyond will include stores in Los Angeles, Corte Madera, Palo Alto, Sacramento, San Diego, El Segundo, San Francisco, San Jose, San Mateo, Costa Mesa, Walnut Creek and Woodland Hills. Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy and liquidated its stores in 2023, operating for about two years as an online-only merchant before beginning to reopen brick-and-mortar locations in 2025.

In a statement following Bed Bath’s announcement, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said, “There’s a lot of profit to be made in California — and we’re thrilled that Bed, Bath & Beyond is opening stores in the Golden State and taking advantage of the benefits of the world’s fastest-growing economy. Welcome to California.”
