Massachusetts Auctions Surplus Land for Housing Development

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has auctioned off five parcels of surplus land for housing in the first such sales under the State Land for Homes initiative. Conducted by JJ Manning Auctioneers, the auction generated $2.9 million in revenue and helped ensure that underutilized former state-owned land will be developed into housing in the towns of Wilmington, Westborough, Northborough, Templeton and Phillipston.

Following the auction, the state is seeking bid for property in Bedford, Bridgewater, Fitchburg and Lowell. However, the Boston Business Journal reported that the biggest potential for turning over surplus land to housing developers may be in Boston, including the adjoining Hurley and Lindemann buildings in the West End and part of the former Boston State Hospital site in Mattapan.

“This auction is an important milestone in our efforts to make state-owned land available for housing development, so we can get more reasonably priced homes built more quickly in this state,” said Gov. Maura Healey.
