Texas Leads Nation in Corralling Outbound Californians
Nearly 100,000 Californians relocated to Texas in just one year, enough to fill a city like College Station annually.
That’s according to the latest StorageCafe research report, which analyzes U.S. migration trends. California continues to lead the nation in outbound migration, with 683,000 residents leaving in a single year. Texas welcomed the largest share, accounting for 16% of all out-of-state newcomers.
Millennials and Gen Z are driving the California-to-Texas migration, with Millennials making up over 31% of movers and Gen Z accounting for 20%. Many of these transplants are highly educated (about one-third hold a bachelor’s degree) and 27% work remotely.
Top migration routes:
- Nearly 3,650 people relocated from Los Angeles County to Travis County, saving around 40% on housing costs. Austin’s tech-forward culture continues to attract highly educated Millennials and Gen Zers.
- Nearly 2,200 Angelenos relocated to Tarrant County, benefiting from 62% lower home prices, 24% lower rent, and an average income of $73,200. Harris County also attracted 2,200 former LA County residents
