JW Marriott adding Battelstein Building to hotel offering

Houston JW Marriott Adding Historic Building to Hotel Property

JW Marriott Houston Downtown will undergo a multimillion-dollar renovation and expansion, incorporating the historic Battelstein Building next door. The project hopes to enhance guest offerings and upgrade the property before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Battelstein Building, a 10-story, 63,960-square-foot structure, housed a family-run department store from 1924 until its closure in 1981 and has remained vacant since. Recognized as a historic landmark in 2024, the building will now be integrated with the JW Marriott’s existing 22-story hotel, located in the Samuel F. Carter Building, which was initially opened in 2014.

The expansion will increase the hotel’s capacity from 328 to 384 guest rooms, including 89 suites. It will also add 10,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a redesigned ground-floor restaurant and lounge, and a rooftop venue featuring a bar, restaurant, and pool.
