Skanska Planning Montrose Highrise

Skanska plans to build a 31-story apartment tower with about 30,000 square feet of retail space at the corner of Westheimer Road and Montrose Boulevard in Houston. The new mixed-use development at 1001 Westheimer Road will be called Starling.

The Houston Business Journal reports Skanska paid $27 million to acquire the 2.86-acre site in August 2020. The prominent piece of land, in the heart of Montrose, was once home to a retail plaza that counted Half-Price Books, Mattress Firm, Mattress Pro and Spec’s Wine and Spirits among its tenants.

There are several high-profile developments recently completed or in the works within just a block or two of the site. The $105 million mixed-use Montrose Collective development, around a block east of the site, broke ground in February 2020 and opened in 2022. It has landed several new-to-Houston tenants and recently welcomed the Freed-Montrose Neighborhood Library.

Colliers Wade Greene and Hannah Schiro of the Houston office have been tapped to pre-lease the project’s retail spaces before construction gets underway.
