White House Moves to Quash Congestion Pricing
Following reports that President Trump wanted to shut down the congestion pricing program that took effect last month as the first of its kind in the U.S., the U.S. Department of Transportation has revoked federal approval of the program. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which has looked to congestion pricing to help fund capital improvements, said Wednesday it would defend the program in federal court.
Under the revised toll structure for the program, passenger vehicles entering Manhattan south of 60th Street paid a $9 toll during peak hours, while trucks and buses paid up to $21.60. “Every American should be able to access New York City regardless of their economic means,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a statement. “It shouldn’t be reserved for an elite few.”
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber noted that the program “has already dramatically reduced congestion, bringing reduced traffic and faster travel times, while increasing speeds for buses and emergency vehicles.” He called USDOT’s revoking of approval “baseless.”
