H-E-B Exploring Landfill Site for Buda Store
There are only so many viable sites for grocery stores. Sometimes, a grocer has to get creative. Grocery chain H-E-B is hoping the Town of Buda will okay financial incentives for the company to convert a former landfill into a site suitable for a new grocery store.
The Buda City Council approved a rezoning request on the property at 15000 N. I-35, where H-E-B aims to build a 135,000-square-foot store with a drive-thru True Texas BBQ restaurant, pharmacy and garden center. Construction is expected to start in 2026. H-E-B says incentives are needed because of the need to dig down 20 feet to replace the soil.
After taking samples the company has not found any sources of contamination, just construction debris.
The Austin Business Journal reports that the council stressed the need for an expanded grocery store to serve Buda and surrounding communities, such as Mustang Ridge, Creedmoor, Niederwald and Del Valle.
