Thanksgiving Weekend Shopping Traffic Exceeds Projections

Nearly 197 million Americans shopped during the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, surpassing the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) forecast of 183.4 million although slightly below the 200 million shoppers recorded in 2023. Shoppers spent an average of $235 on gifts, with apparel, toys and personal care items as top purchases, according to NRF.

“Even with this year’s shortened shopping period and the multitude of early sales promotions from retailers, this past weekend exceeded expectations in terms of the sheer volume of shoppers,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay told Reuters..

Black Friday was the most popular day of the extended weekend, with 81.7 million in-store shoppers and 87.3 million online. NRF said a record 126 million consumers shopped in-person over the five-day period, up from 121.4 million last year, as consumers continue seeking holiday experiences and social interactions. Cyber Monday was the second most popular for online shopping, with 64.4 million consumers.
