Aldi to Open at West Loop Mixed-Use Development

Aldi will open a grocery store in a yet-to-be-built high-rise in the West Loop. The grocery chain has signed a 15-year lease for 22,000 square feet at 1016 W. Jackson Blvd., where Mavrek Development plans to build a 380-unit apartment building, reported Crain’s.

Chicago-based Mavrek is planning to build 380 apartments, including 76 affordable units, at the $150 million development. The developer will break ground in 2025, with Aldi expected to open its 22,000-square-foot space in 2026.

According to its website, Aldi, the Germany-based discount grocer, has 33 locations in the Chicago area. In January, it opened a new store at Roosevelt Plaza in Lombard. The new West Loop location is part of a larger expansion effort for Aldi. The company announced earlier this year to add 800 stores across the U.S. by the end of 2028, investing more than $9 billion.
