SA Ballpark Proposal Gaining Steam
The San Antonio Mission’s minor league baseball team currently plays in a 30-year-old stadium in an industrial district that Major League Baseball says is subpar (photo). The league asked the franchise’s owners to get them plans for a new ballpark by August 1.
The City Council has approved a memorandum of understanding with all of the stakeholders that would allow a new ballpark to be built in NW San Antonio.
The San Antonio Business Journal reports preliminary plans center around a stadium that would be constructed in northwest downtown and accommodate approximately 7,500 fans. The ballpark cost is roughly $160 million and would be funded with tax revenue generated by as much as a billion dollars worth of private mixed-use development surrounding the stadium. Most of the property for the stadium and the planned surrounding development has been acquired by Weston Urban, which has an ownership stake in the Missions.
MLB says it will expect more detailed plans by October 15th.
