Historic Austin Theatre Undertaking $22M Facelift
Austin’s State Theatre is getting ready for a complete makeover. The historic theatre at 719 Congress Ave. will undergo $22 million in renovations beginning in March 2025.
The Austin Theatre Alliance owns the State Theatre and the adjoining Paramount Theatre. The Austin Business Journal reports that the renovations would amount to a complete redo, including adding a rooftop lounge, repairing the building’s facade, and establishing an interior connection to the Paramount Theatre.
Clayton Korte was identified as the design firm for the project.
The State Theatre opened in 1935 and was the first theater in the city built specifically to watch films. The 305-seat venue now hosts films, live performances and conference-style events, according to Visit Austin’s website.
The Paramount Theatre, built in 1915, is even older. Combined, the two venues host over 550 events a year.
