NAIOP NYC, AAREA Team Up for Sept. 18 Networking Event
NAIOP NYC and the New York chapter of AAREA are teaming up for a networking event Sept. 18 at Yankee Stadium’s Audi Club, introducing the first-ever soccer-specific venue built in New York City. In advance of the event, Connect CRE reached out to the leadership of NAIOP NYC for a preview. Here’s what they told us:
Q: How long have NAIOP NYC and AAREA NY chapter been working together on networking events?
A: This the first event we have partnered on but Tim Oberweger, NAIOP Communications Chair, SVP at Commonwealth Land Title National Commercial Services, moderated an AREAA Manhattan/Jia Law Group event over the summer and Jason Jia was Tim’s mentee while Jason was a student at Brooklyn Law School.
Q: It’s common for industry associations to serve as the main or sole sponsor for networking events. What is the value to associations and their members of teaming up with other groups?
A: It’s very common for local chapters of industry associations to work together, but New York CRE organizations tend to do it less than in other markets.
Q: In addition to the networking opportunity, what is special and unique about this event and key takeaways that will be discussed?
A: We will be discussing the new stadium that is currently being built for NYCFC which leads perfectly to your next question.
Q: In 2027, New York City FC will open the first-ever soccer-specific stadium in New York City in Willets Point, Queens. This public-private partnership with the City of New York will not only include New York City’s first-ever soccer-specific stadium, but it will also feature affordable housing, a public school, hotel and retail shops and public open space. Why is this development something of note?
A: This is a development of note based on what you listed in your question: the first soccer-specific stadium ever built in NYC, affordable housing, school, hotel retail, and I’d add that as a native New Yorker my whole life there have been discussions of how to create a better use for Willets Point. I attended many a Jets/Mets game where the only parking available was on the streets being developed and they were mostly dirt roads with “chop shops,” so this development is well overdue and will only change the neighborhood, Queens, NYC & the Tri-State area for the better.
