NY to Renovate Lexington Ave Armory with $120M Project
New York has initiated a search for a construction firm to undertake a renovation project valued at up to $120 million for the historic Lexington Avenue Armory, home to the New York National Guard’s 69th Regiment. The renovation plans, announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul, include the replacement of mechanical, electric, and plumbing systems, accessibility upgrades, and other interior improvements. Designs for the renovation have been completed by New York architecture firm Marvel.
The state will cover approximately 25% of the renovation costs, with the federal government contributing $90 million. The Lexington Avenue Armory stands out with its Beaux Arts design among the few remaining active armories in Manhattan. While most other armories have been repurposed into cultural centers, gyms, or community facilities, the Lexington Avenue Armory continues to serve as a military readiness center. The state aims to select a winning bidder for the renovation project by mid-August.
