Finegold Alexander Architects Receives Two Preservation MA Awards
Finegold Alexander Architects announced that their projects, the Lower Basin Barracks and The First Church of Christ, Scientist, have received the 2024 Preservation Massachusetts Paul & Niki Tsongas Awards for outstanding historic preservation.
The Lower Basin Barracks, a 15,000-square-foot renovation, modernized a deteriorating 1908 facility to meet the State Police’s current and future needs. Finegold Alexander preserved the building’s historic elements, including the exterior masonry, original wood window frames, and the iconic tower with its copper bays.
The First Church of Christ, Scientist, a 192,000-square-foot landmark, underwent extensive restoration of both its Neoclassical and Romanesque Revival structures. The multi-phased project included exterior and interior work, such as the ornate dome and original Guastavino semi-domes. The restoration, completed with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Shawmut Design and Construction, and Finegold Alexander, spanned over eight years.
