Redesign Proposals Unveiled for DC Chinatown

The Washington, D.C., Gallery Place/Chinatown Task Force has unveiled its “8 Big Ideas” for redesigning the city’s Chinatown neighborhood, home to the Capital One Arena complex and National Portrait Gallery. The proposals include converting millions of square feet of office space into approximately 7,000 residential units to meet demands for more green space, better walkability, and increased access to affordable housing.

Co-chaired by Deputy Mayor Nina Albert, Edens CEO Jodie McLean, and Uplands Real Estate principal Deborah Ratner Salzberg, the task force aims to revitalize the area. Ideas include creating a pedestrian-friendly “Gallery Square and Walk” along Eighth Street Northwest and transforming the Capital One Arena into a more welcoming space. The plan also considers redeveloping large government buildings like the GAO and Department of Labor headquarters into residential units.

The task force is seeking community feedback and aims to finalize its recommendations by September. Funding mechanisms for the proposals have not been disclosed.
