Brookfield Wins Planning Commission Approval for Stonestown Revamp
Brookfield Properties’ redevelopment plan for the Stonestown Galleria shopping mall won unanimous approval from the San Francisco Planning Commission. Reportedly the city’s biggest post-pandemic development, the 43-are project would create a new west-side neighborhood with 3,500 housing units and a green, walkable town center, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.
Commissioners praised the plan, calling it a model for the type of infill development that will help San Francisco meet its state-mandated goal of planning for 82,000 additional housing units by 2031, the Chronicle reported. Planning Commission President Sue Diamond called the project “an incredibly thoughtful example of urban design” and a “wonderful example of how we are going to fulfill the state mandate of 82,000 units.”
The project still needs approval by the Board of Supervisors. It would encompass six acres of parks, including a town square with outdoor dining, recreation space and a plaza to host the neighborhood farmers’ market. There would also be a new “main street” of retailers, restaurants and an entertainment venues corridor along 20th Avenue, totaling about 150,000 square feet.
