Wyndham Orlando Resort closes doors, lays off workers, preparing major renovation

Orlando’s Wyndham Resort Closing, Major Redo Likely

The 633-room Wyndham Orlando Resort is closing its doors and laying off all 167 workers. The operating group has made tidbits public that indicate the property could be ready for redevelopment. Unicorp owns the resort and 39 acres along the International Drive corridor. A representative of the company successfully obtained a lot split. It’s unclear why the lot split was requested.

The Orlando Business Journal reports the Wyndham Orlando Resort, which has been open since the 1970s, has undergone some changes over the years. It was originally built as a 1,058-room hotel with buildings fronting International Drive. The resort was eventually redeveloped, removing rooms and building 100,000 square feet of retail space.

With the planned expansion of the nearby Universal theme park and the Orange County Convention Center, Unicorp is likely planning a new venture to capitalize on the area’s growth.
