Mayor Adams Proposes New Zoning Changes 

New York City officials, led by Mayor Eric Adams, have proposed zoning changes aimed at addressing the housing crisis by increasing housing development across all neighborhoods. The amendments, part of the “City of Yes” initiative, aim to add approximately 20% of the mayor’s goal of 500,000 housing units over the next decade.  

These changes include increasing building density for affordable housing and allowing for new apartment buildings close to transit and commercial areas. Additionally, homeowners in low-density neighborhoods would be permitted to add extra apartments. The proposal aims to provide more housing options and alleviate the city’s housing shortage. The changes will undergo public review before final approval. 

“The human consequences of our housing shortage are clear: rising rents, homelessness, displacement, and an imbalance of power between landlords and tenants,” City Planning Commissioner Dan Garodnick said in a statement. “City of Yes for Housing Opportunity would help alleviate this crisis by providing New Yorkers with more housing choice, and the release of the draft zoning text is an important step toward making that happen.”
