Skanska Inks Deal to Build $1.4B New Portage Bay Bridge
Skanska and The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) announced a new design and construction agreement that will replace Seattle’s Portage Bay Bridge in a $1.4 billion project. The firm will begin construction in August, with anticipated completion in 2031.
This project replaces the existing Portage Bay Bridge to meet current seismic resiliency standards and creates a lidded segment at East Roanoke Street. The again bridge was built in the 1960s and requires replacement to withstand earthquakes. According to WSDOT, the four-lane bridge is supported by hollow concrete columns, which could collapse in a major earthquake.
The project will also include updated roadways, dedicated carpool and public transit lanes and the construction of a landscaped open space lid over the highway. The span connects the Eastlake and Montlake neighborhoods just north of Seattle’s Capitol Hill.
Skanska is active in the Pacific Northwest, and the Swedish firm recently signed on to a $211 million project to rebuild Beaverton High School in Oregon.
