Historic Boston Hotel Site Redevelopment Returns to Plan A
In a strategic move, developers Jas Bhogal and Thomas Calus have reapplied to the Boston Planning and Development Agency to revert their plans for the Alexandria Hotel redevelopment to its original concept: a 12-story, 150-room hotel, Boston Business Journal reported.
Initially approved in 2019, the project pivoted to residential use in response to pandemic-induced challenges in Boston’s hotel sector. However, with the resurgence of the hotel market, the team seeks to capitalize on the rebound by reinstating the hotel proposal. The redevelopment will retain and restore the historic hotel’s facade while replacing the deteriorated structure behind it.
Despite prior approval for residential units, financing constraints have rendered the residential aspect economically unviable. The project’s design, height, and size remain unchanged, with CBT serving as the primary architect. Located at the intersection of Washington Street and Massachusetts Avenue, the 150-year-old building has stood vacant for decades due to fire and water damage.
