House Passes Bill to Redevelop RFK Stadium
Washington, DC., Mayor Muriel Bowser is making progress in bringing the NFL’s Washington Commanders back to their former DC home at the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. The U.S. House of Representatives passed HR 4984, allowing the DC government to redevelop the stadium and its surrounding land. The bill now heads to the Senate after passing with a vote of 348-55.
The legislation would extend the District’s lease of the stadium land for 99 years, enabling D.C. to redevelop it for a new stadium and mixed-use campus, including retail and office space. The plan also allocates 30% of the land for open space.
The Commanders have played in Maryland since 1997, but their lease expires in 2027. Attracting the team back to D.C. could be significant for the city, which may soon lose the Washington Wizards and Capitals to a new arena in Alexandria, Virginia.
