Amkor Moving Ahead on $2B Peoria Plant
The new Peoria Amkor semiconductor packaging and testing plant will feature 500,000 square feet of clean room space and will add 2,000 jobs to the growing area. The Phoenix Business Journal reports the Peoria facility is expected to become the largest outsourced packaging plant in the United States. Amkor is set to package and test chips for industry heavyweight Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., whose multi-billion factory is under construction just down the road.
The City Council recently approved a development agreement with Amkor and the developer of the master-planned Vistancia community in Peoria for public infrastructure costs, and to establish a timeline for Amkor to start construction and hire workers.
Through the agreement, the company has promised to build its facility over two phases and invest at least $700 million while hiring 850 people with minimum annual salaries of $60,000. Its new plant will be built across 55 acres near the northwest corner of the Loop 303 and Vistancia Boulevard.
Amkor products are in smartphones and tablets, the automotive industry, computing and consumer uses such as gaming and home electronics.
