Buc-ee’s Megastore Slated for San Marcos

There aren’t many gas station owners that go hat in hand to the local government to request a government incentive if they build in the town. When it’s Buc-ee’s, it’s probably a good idea for the town council to give a listen. Buc-ee’s is eyeing a 74,000-square-foot family travel center in San Marcos, which would be as big as some grocery stores.

San Marcos and Hays County are likely to agree to a 15-year deal with a 50% sales tax rebate for the company if they agree to invest at least $50 million in the site and create 175 full-time jobs. Buc-ee’s will have to pay 100% of the property tax due.

The city is estimated to retain $5.9 million in property taxes and $3.2 million in sales taxes over the 15-year-period.. The county is estimated to retain $1 million in sales taxes and $2.8 million in property taxes. It’s expected to generate $11.4 million in taxes for the Hays Consolidated Independent School District.
